 Water filtration systems. You can purchase water filtration systems that will filter contaminants out of water harvested from potentially unsafe sources. This allows you to collect water from lakes, rivers, streams and many other sources that normally wouldn't be considered safe for consumption. Run the water through the filter and most of the contaminants will be filtered out. There are handheld filters you can buy that work well, but I recommend a larger system capable of filtering more water if it's going to be used while hunkering down.
